3D Printing Basics: Slicing Settings for PLA

If you're new to 3D printing, PLA is the friendliest material to start with — and getting a few slicer settings right makes the difference between a smooth print and a stringy, warped mess.

Two settings matter most. First, nozzle temperature: most PLA prints well between 190–220°C. Too cold and layers won't bond properly; too hot and you'll get stringing or blobbing. Second, cooling: PLA loves airflow. Turning your part cooling fan on after the first layer helps each layer solidify quickly, which is why PLA holds sharp corners and overhangs so well compared to other filaments.

Bed temperature is usually a gentle 50–60°C — just enough to help the first layer stick without needing exotic adhesives. A clean glue stick or a textured build plate is often all you need.

One more setting worth knowing: retraction. This pulls the filament back slightly whenever the nozzle moves without printing, preventing oozing and thin hair-like strings between parts of your model. Start with your slicer's default and nudge it if you spot stringing.

Get these dialed in, and PLA becomes about as close to "print and forget" as 3D printing gets.
